JSU’s Art and Design Department is thrilled to announce that our very own John Oles recently accepted his nomination into the International Academy of Ceramics!
For those of you who do not know our ceramics professor John Oles, John took his first ceramics class around 1995 and quickly found a specialty in porcelain, where his skill and expertise have produced nationally recognized works. John has been working almost exclusively in porcelain since 2004.
In May of this year, John spent 6 weeks as an artist in residence at the Jingdezhen Ceramics University International Studio in Jingdezhen, China. In Jingdezhen, the birthplace of porcelain, John and 12 other artists were tasked with creating bodies of work during their residences. During his time there, John connected with fellow ceramists, explored the culture, and spent four weeks creating multiple sculptural pieces using plaster molds taken from natural materials such as sticks and branches he collected in the region.
John plans to return to Jingdezhen in 2026 to attend the IAC conference to be officially inducted into the International Academy of Ceramics. We extend a huge congratulations to John Oles on his accomplishments both in his field and in the classroom!
